There was supposed to be a patio party with friends. Social distance and all. But there is a heavy storm due to hit and the get together gets cancelled. It seems sunny all morning. I go out for a coffee and the rain starts.
The crazy woman with the stuffed bear seems to have brought all her belongings to the entrance of our building. She hugs the bear, then tells him he smells like mildew. She tells him it’s not his fault he’ s a bear. I wonder where she will sleep. There’s a desperation and sadness in her I haven’t heard before.

The production of Merchant of Venice currently streaming from the Royal Shkespeare Company features Palestinian Christian Israeli actor Makram J. Khoury as the much spat upon and disrespected Shylock and Nadia Albina, an actor born with one arm, plays Nerisssa so we have to both notice and not notice, which I guess is the point. This production has Antonio and Bassanio as actual lovers and has Shylock’s Jessica not at peace with her choices. No less a problematic play than ever, especially in times of BLM and all we are reconsidering
